Threaded Inserts Guide - MJF/ FDM Printing

Are printed threads not enough for your application? Consider adding threaded inserts!

We recommend the fitting of threaded brass bushings into 3D printed components to achieve greater resistance to wear and the assembly/disassembly of parts.

Here is a short guide with technical tips:

Pilot hole

To allow the insert to be installed, you will need to take into account the following considerations:

  • The diameter of the hole on the component (d3) needs to be designed with size equal or less than the dimensions reported for the desired insert, because during the installation some material is required to be removed.
  • In the case of a non-through hole the depth of it needs to be at least the length L plus at least 1mm.
  • The minimum distance to the wall (W), during the design phase, needs to be kept at minimum the same as reported in the attached table.

Pilot hole

Possibile limitations

  • Due to the flatness of the top surface of the insert, it may create discontinuity on the component surface.
  • It is advisable not to use fillets or chamfers in the pilot hole design, as to allow the insert to sit flush to the component

These threaded inserts can be applied to thermoplastic polymers such as those used in HP MJF or FDM (filament).

❗They cannot, however, be applied to thermosetting materials such as resins processed with MSLA technology.
